Lucas has travelled extensively in Australia's arid areas. He has driven through many deserts including off-track cross country driving to reach the start and finish of some of his desert walks. He has crossed the Simpson a number of times in vehicles including a summer trip and has driven all the major routes including the Rig Road, WAA, French Line, QAA, Colson and K1. He has also driven extensively off-track in the Simpson and has explored different sections of Sturts Stony Desert and the Strzlecki Desert. He has worked on film and TV productions in the Centre including at Mt Connor and the Western MacDonnell Ranges.
Lucas is the first person to have walked across the Simpson Desert on foot, through the centre and unsupported. He pulled a cart weighing 160kg with all his own water, food and supplies for the 400km/17 day trip.
He has conducted a number of desert expeditions:
- Sturts Stony Desert: 3-day unsupported family walking trip.
- Strzlecki Desert: 5-day unsupported family walking trip in the Lake Goyder/Coongi Lakes region.
- Simpson Desert: Solo, unsupported 17-day, 400km west-to-east crossing (the first ever through the centre) carrying all his own water and supplies in a special desert cart.
- Simpson Desert: Set up and support of a five-person, 280km crossing on foot from East Bore to Poeppel Corner.
- Western MacDonnell Ranges: Numerous walks including remote Mt Zeil (the highest mountain in NT) and a group trip to climb difficult Mt Giles near Ormiston Pound.
- Pitjanjara Land and Simpson Desert: vehicle based with day walks.
- Lake Goyder and Lake Marroocoolcannie in the Strzlecki: Overnight walking and vehicle exploration in this region near Coongie
