Blue Mountains Climber's Rescue
Group
Report - Practice Day
29/11/00
13 people from a variety of
backgrounds attended the day at Narrowneck and a couple of
scenarios/systems were practised. Seven of those who attended were
on their first prac day with the group.
We did a simple raise of litter with patient and litter attendant
on the small cliff at the zig in the access road at Narrowneck.
The Larkin Frame was used and the systems were explained and
demonstrated to the new members.
We then went to the area above the 100' Slab where we did a lift
of two rescuers and a litter with a patient in the litter. The
idea of this exerciuse was to try our systems on a less than
vertical lift. Two litter attendants made it easier to keep the
litter off the cliff face. Some ingenuity was required to set up
our "standard systems" in the limited working area on the shale
ledge at the top belay of 100' slab. It was considered at one
stage to split the systems and have the hauling team and bolt on
system above the belay anchors - this was considered to facilitate
easier resets (due to loose rocks and sloping ground), but this
was deemed unecessary in the end and resets were done remotely
using a length of rope.
The general consensus was that wherever possible it will be
simpler in most situations to stick with minimal positional
variations to our Standard Procedures which are detailed elsewhere
on this site.
A 4:1 hauling ratio was used with a team of 5 haulers and was
acceptable. Because we were using some existing bolts of unknown
origin for part of our main anchor we also added three lines of
static rope (equalised) to some trees and boulder anchors on a
ledge above the shale ledge.
A moveable redirection (set up with a 3:1 pulley system) was
utilised to keep the rescue line and belay line away from a loose
rocky slope until the litter was almost at the top. This worked
well.
Due to the fact that we are basing our use of a Gri Gri for
belaying of rescue line and belay lines on tests that have been
done with 200 kg loads we ensured that the total load was less
than 200 kg.
The second prac day which was scheduled for Saturday 2/12/00 was
cancelled.
